Description

French Onion Scalloped Potatoes are an irresistible comfort food that beautifully marries the creamy richness of scalloped potatoes with the savory depth of French onion soup. Layers of tender russet potatoes, sweet caramelized onions, and gooey Gruyère cheese create a dish that’s perfect for festive gatherings or cozy family dinners. With a golden-brown crust and a symphony of flavors, this delectable side will elevate any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium Russet potatoes (about 2 lbs), thinly sliced
  • 2 large yellow onions, sliced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese, grated
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme or ½ tsp dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Thinly slice the russet potatoes and soak them in cold water to prevent browning.
  3. In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter and sauté onions until golden brown (about 15 minutes).
  4. In a bowl, combine heavy cream with minced garlic, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  5. In a greased baking dish, layer half of the potato slices, pour half of the cream mixture over them, and add half of the sautéed onions. Repeat layers.
  6. Top with grated Gruyère cheese and bake uncovered for about an hour or until bubbly and golden brown.
