Ingredients
  

Candy Apple Base
  • 4 large apples Granny Smith or Fuji recommended
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon red food coloring optional
Toppings
  • 1 cup chopped nuts such as peanuts or almonds
  • 1 cup sprinkles various colors
  • 1 cup chocolate chips melted for drizzling

Method
 

Prepare the Apples
  1. Wash and dry the apples thoroughly. Remove any wax coating if necessary.
  2. Insert wooden sticks into the top of each apple.
Make the Candy Coating
  1. In a saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, and water. Cook over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil without stirring. Use a candy thermometer to monitor the temperature until it reaches 300°F (hard crack stage).
  3. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract and food coloring if using.
Coat the Apples
  1. Dip each apple into the hot candy coating, swirling to coat evenly. Allow excess to drip off.
  2. Roll the coated apples in your choice of toppings or drizzle with melted chocolate.
Set and Serve
  1. Place the coated apples on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper to cool and set.
  2. Once set, serve immediately or store in a cool, dry place.
