For the Bread
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour Whole wheat flour can be used for a heartier flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda Leavening agent.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Enhances flavor.
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk Can substitute with milk mixed with vinegar.
For Optional Add-ins
  • 1/2 cup raisins or currants Adds sweetness; dried cranberries make a great alternative.
  • 1 tablespoon caraway seeds Adds traditional flavor; omit if preferred.

Method
 

Baking Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Mix the dry ingredients in a large bowl: combine all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt, whisking until well blended.
  3. Add the buttermilk gradually while stirring with a wooden spoon until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough lightly on a floured surface about 5-7 times until slightly smooth but still a bit sticky.
  5. Shape the dough into a round loaf about 1½ inches thick.
  6. Cut a deep cross on top of the loaf about ½ inch deep.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. Cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before slicing.
