Ingredients
  

Okra
  • 1 pound fresh okra sliced into 1/2 inch pieces
Breading
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
Wet Ingredients
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup buttermilk
Oil for Frying
  • 2 cups vegetable oil for frying

Method
 

Prepare the Okra
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the sliced okra with buttermilk and egg. Stir to coat.
Make the Breading
  1. In another bowl, mix together cornmeal, flour, salt, black pepper, and paprika.
Coat the Okra
  1. Remove the okra from the buttermilk mixture, allowing excess to drip off, then dredge in the cornmeal mixture until well coated.
Fry the Okra
  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat. Fry the okra in batches until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per batch.
  2. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the fried okra to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
Serve
  1. Serve hot as a side dish or appetizer.
